Day 3 Hay to Mildura, via Balranald, 25 May 2026

Hay has some rather fun sheep sculptures.

Apparently Mrs McGrath regularly led mobs of sheep - 10,000 in a mob - over the Murrumbidgee bridge into and out of Hay during the 1920s and 1930s.

The mob would follow Mrs McGrath’s pet sheep who in turn followed her, while holding a bag of stale bread to keep them interested.

Is it significant that a sheep sits outside the Council?

So strong were the head and horns of the 1932 champion Uardry ram from Hay with his “soft, richly crimped fleece” that he was immortalised on the Australian shilling coin in 1938.

Classic Victorian 1883 water fountain presented to the people of Hay by the then Mayor.

The old Fire Station, now a book store.

Looking down the Murrumbidgee River from the bridge.

And perhaps a scarred tree from long ago?
