Day 3 (contd) Balranald

Balranald has magnificent river red gums beside the Murrumbidgee in the riverside park.

On the return journey from Carpentaria in March 1861 Burke and Wills and the others camped here (camp 20). Just a few months they died, leaving only King who was saved by the local Aborigines.

Now there is an outdoor fitness gym in the reserve headed up by a frog.

Balranald has a thing about frogs because the Endangered Southern Bell frog still lives here, despite its range having reduced by more than fifty percent in the past 20 years or so.

And this is the road between Hay and Balranald.
