Albany 26-27 Sept 2025

Decided to take the train to Albany rather than ride the Erie Canal.

I don't enjoy endless flat paths besides canals or rivers; I prefer the mountains and the clean bright air. Plus you're always on the pedals, there's no respite on the flat.

At least with mountains or hills it may be a struggle going up but the joy of riding down is exhilarating.

A few pics of Albany below. We went to the Institute of History and Art. Some challenging contemporary art works, plus more traditional like the Hudson River School artists.

Recommended the Iron Gate Cafe. Good coffee in the garden or inside in a rather special old house.

Then to the New York State Museum.

En route a protest against the government was starting in front of the New York State Capitol.

Wowed by the Empire State Plaza…but they destroyed many homes to build it.

The Museum has a vast number of exhibits: natural history, an 1890 carousel with its Wurlitzer organ (yes of course we went for a ride!), and very moving focus on the firefighters who attended the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster. Including interviews with those still grappling with PTSD.

A huge day of walking, looking and learning. A lot to take in.
